Yongji Industry: What are the precautions for the construction of thermosetting powder coatings

Date: 2020-09-10

Thermosetting powder coatings are applied using high-voltage, low current electrostatic spraying technology, and can be sprayed using manual spray guns or automatic coating assembly lines composed of multiple spray guns. Friction powder guns that work on the principle of frictional charging are not effective for all types of powder coatings. When using such guns, attention should be paid to the selection of powder coating types.

Powder coating is fed into the powder conveying pipe from the powder supplier under clean and dry compressed air, and then sent to the high-voltage electrostatic powder spraying gun by the airflow. The corona discharge at the outlet of the powder spraying gun causes the powder coating particles to carry electrostatic negative charges, and the charged powder coating is adsorbed onto the grounded workpiece by the airflow. The powder with electrostatic charge has a strong adsorption force and a certain degree of adhesion when adsorbed on the workpiece. Ordinary airflow or slight vibration cannot cause the powder to fall off.

After years of close cooperation between spray equipment factories and powder coating manufacturers in our country, the required parameters such as spray speed, air pressure, and voltage have been standardized.

Before the sprayed workpiece enters the drying oven or oven, the sprayed workpiece should be carefully inspected, and any thin or damaged areas should be repainted or repaired completely. When it cannot be repaired, the powder on the workpiece can be removed with compressed air and re sprayed. Compared with ordinary paint, this process can correct defects during the construction process in the early stages, so the scrap rate of powder coating is extremely low.

Directly feed the sprayed workpiece into a drying oven or oven (without open flames), and the powder coating is melted, leveled, and solidified into a coating film at the temperature required by the process. The general curing conditions are to bake the workpiece at 180 ℃ for 10-15 minutes (of course, the time for the workpiece to rise from room temperature to this temperature, that is, the size and heat capacity of the workpiece, must be considered).

As long as the curing process conditions of powder coatings are strictly followed, high-performance coatings can generally be obtained in the vast majority of cases. For high-quality powder coatings, a certain degree of over baking is allowed without affecting the performance of the coating.

Electrical equipment for curing ovens and drying channels should be regularly inspected and repaired in a timely manner to ensure that the required conditions remain fixed and unchanged.

In order to ensure high-quality coating, strict implementation should be carried out during construction:

1. Powder coatings should be stored in a cool, dry and sealed environment, and used strictly in batch order.

2. Before spraying the workpiece, all surface oil stains and pollutants should be thoroughly removed, and the workpiece should be properly treated.

3. Compressed air should be free of oil, water, and dry, and the working condition of the oil-water separator should be checked regularly.

4. The structural design of the workpiece clamping component should be reasonable and maintain a good connection with the grounding transmission part. The fixtures should be cleaned regularly to maintain good grounding. 5. Correctly select the powder coating required for the final coating

6. The temperature control system of the oven should have stable performance and ensure the conditions required for curing the coating.

7. The powder supplier, recycling system, and spray cabinet should be free from contamination and not mix with other powders, otherwise it will affect the appearance of the final coating.

8. Regularly inspect the performance of pre-treatment and curing furnaces, and check the physical properties of the powders used.

9. Recycled powder must be sieved and mixed with new powder in the prescribed ratio for use. 10. Silicon or paint dust should be avoided near the powder coating spraying site to avoid affecting the appearance quality.
